Balancing Truth; Security for Life

Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Psalm 119:142 Thy righteousness is the everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.

Psalm 119:160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

What is truth?

Let’s start with what is not truth.

Truth is not what makes you feel good. Truth is not whatever works for you. Truth is not what is coherent and understandable. Truth is not what the majority or minority thinks. Truth is not even necessarily what you believe. However, truth is much simpler than we choose to make it.

Truth is not relative. Although many believe this. You cannot say my truth is different than yours because truth is truth. You might believe differently but, that doesn’t change the absolute. This is hard for most, especially in the world today. We are fed lies daily. But, if you knew the absolute, how different would your life change?

Now I know people have different foundations. People believe different things. Some are tossed and thrown by any conspiracy theory they hear. Because they do not know the truth. However, if you have the solid, firm foundation of faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior it cannot be shaken. God says many things about setting up your heart, mind, body and soul on a firm foundation.

Matthew 7:24:27 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on the house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like the foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

I remember in college at Dallas Baptist University having a lecture on Absolute Truth and then having to write papers for or against it. What is it?

Absolute truth is something that is true at all times and in all places. Can you say that about the foundation on which you stand and base your life? Do you know if your foundation is built on the rock or sand? Do you base your choices in life on absolute truth, something that cannot be changed? It is always true no matter the circumstances.

Growing up I had a very conflicting, chaotic, traumatic childhood and that was experienced with the backdrop of a belief that I had to be good to go to heaven. Tornadoes in my life destroyed that belief system because I never believed I could accomplish that; I was intrinsically bad. Try, try, try, strive, strive, strive, fail, fail, fail.

I encountered God’s amazing grace and ultimate forgiveness when I was in the humbling positions of failure. The absolute truth that Christ died for a human wretch like me and that I was heaven bound and not tied to failing doctrine was life changing. Now with lots of prayer and deep study of God’s word I can begin to fully understand the lies I have believed and transform my life on that cornerstone of faith.

In this incredibly confused, conflicted world we live in, if you can base your decisions solely on the absolute truth of Jesus as your foundational infrastructure, your base for mental, physical, emotional, spiritual decisions how would life be different?

For me, knowing God’s grace is sufficient even when I fail, knowing Jesus died for me, trusting he suffered in every single way I did and more, brings that peace in the decision-making process. Does this align with the base on which I stand my ground. Will this bring heartache, or conflict? Does this sway me off my solid base, lead me down a rabbit whole, go against any truth that I have already discovered was absolute?

These are the questions we must ask ourselves. How amazing is our God that life is balanced on Him. Not on my works, not my striving, not on my trying, not on others, not on my failures and wins. Now that is merciful and gracious unconditional love. Why would we not want that truth in our life?

Security is a necessity in my life, and knowing my hope is secure in Christ is the safest, strongest position to stand. A firm footing is safety from falling into the dark crevices that threaten our walk forward in life. The cross is the lightening rod that took on all the heat for me. Christ died so that I might live. To live I must stand firm in my faith and trust that God is the barometer, the measuring stick, the guiding light of hope leading me to higher, safer ground. The absolute truth of Salvation in Him.

Lord, this is such a hard concept for us to wrap our limited mind around. Faith is the thing hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Help us to trust and grow our faith to believe in the absolute freedom that comes in trusting you as our foundation for life living in this fallen, confused place. Wrap your loving arms around us and set us firmly in your hand. Show us the light of your salvation as we navigate living. In Christ we pray.

Stay Beautiful,

Susanne
